A whole-house humidifier is an affordable solution to dry air and increased electric bills. Shop manual and automatic bypass humidifiers, fan-powered humidifiers and whole-house humidifier maintenance kits to keep your unit operating properly.
What are the differences between bypass and fan-powered humidifiers?
Bypass Humidifiers
A bypass humidifier uses an attached bypass duct to circulate air from your furnace's or AC's blower motor through a water panel to create moisture. Bypass humidifiers require that your unit be running in order to work and the ductwork necessary to power this unit will require additional space for installation. Since bypass humidifiers don't have an internal fan, they are more quiet than their counterparts.
Fan-Powered Humidifiers
A fan-powered unit creates humidity in the same way as its bypass counterpart - by moving air over a moistened pad, however, instead of using air from the unit's blower motor, the fan-powered unit uses an independent internal fan to generate it's own moving air. Because of this, it can operate even when your heat or AC is off. This saves on energy costs and additional ductwork, making a fan-powered humidifier an ideal solution for homes were space may be limited. The internal fan will be responsible for some additional noise.
A humidifier will either be manual or automatic. Automatic humidifiers use outdoor temperature sensors to adjust their humidity controls. Manual units require the homeowner to keep an eye on the humidity levels to make proper adjustments. A manual unit is especially useful in areas where outdoor temperatures fluctuate widely or rapidly.
